Italian Lakes - Travel Magazine Italian Lakes Wed, 25 Mar 2015 09:51:58 +0000 en hourly 1 Sport and nature for Easter at Lake Como Wed, 25 Mar 2015 09:45:25 +0000 Vacanze Lago

It is not long now until Easter and in Italy there is an old saying “Christmas at home and Easter with whomever you wish”, so it’s time to take a break from daily life and perhaps organize a long-weekend getaway trip to discover the beauties of Lake Como.

Easter on Lake ComoLake Como with its mountain landscape and shores dotted with picturesque villages is a corner of paradise.

Without having to drive too far you can get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and discover the gems of beautiful Lake Como.

There are many things to do in Lake Como, for all tastes and all ages.: a wide range of cultural, sports, and entertainment activities, as well as a wide selection of restaurants and trattorias where you can taste the savory dishes of traditional Lake Como cooking.

Those who love peace and relaxation can enjoy long walks on the lake and make beautiful trips to explore the lake.

For lovers of sport, Domaso and Gravedona are very popular for their sailing schools that organize courses for beginners and experts. There is also a school of windsurfing. In this area the Breva, a steady wind, blows all afternoon long, but not too strongly making it the optimal condition for sailing or windsurfing.

No one who visits Lake Como should miss a trip around the lake on a private hire boat (motor boat, sailing boat, rowing boat) to enjoy the lake from a completely different perspective, or if you just prefer to take some time to relax, you can enjoy the numerous small pebble beaches and lidos along the lake where you can rent deck chairs at reasonable prices..

You can also explore the area around the lake by bike, there are many scenic roads and cycle paths that offer the visitor an alternative way of visiting various parts of the lake; mountain bike rental services can be found in almost every town on the shores of the lake.

There are a number of locations around Lake Como which offer horseback riding for enthusiasts and beginners first of all the Pian di Spagna, one of the most beautiful protected areas of the Lombardy region.

For those who wish to play golf, there are well known courses both in Como and Menaggio. The Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club with its’ 18 hole golf course is worth to be mentioned being the second oldest club in Italy lies high in the hills over-looking the western shore of Lake Como offering enchanting views over the surrounding countryside.

A wander around Lake Iseo Thu, 19 Mar 2015 11:14:47 +0000 Vacanze Lago

The following post about Lake Iseo is by guest blogger Elisa Pigoli (photos are also provided by my guest)

Many people say travel makes them feel alive; when we travel, we step into the unknown and we let ourselves be guided by the energy of flow in each moment. We find inspiration along the way in the most unlikely places..whether they are far away in another continent or nearby at only a few hours from where we live….The world in which we live is full of wonderful places that are waiting to be discovered!

Today I’m taking you to Lake Iseo, situated just north of the cities of Brescia and Bergamo, in Val Camonica. It’s the smallest of Lombardy’s four major lakes, but it is often bypassed by foreign visitors in favour of its more glamorous Garda, Como and Maggiore, however it’s the quintessential ‘undiscovered gem’ and visitors who go to tranquil Lake Iseo find the same stunning blue mountains and azure water as you may find travelling to the other lakes.

Lake Iseo (also known by its Latin name Sabino) appears like a long blue shadow wedged between mountains in the southern Alps, with rising land on all sides and it would be impossible not to be enchanted by Monte Isola,  that rises from the centre of Lago Iseo like a dream, after a short trip by ferry leaving from Sulzano or Sale Marasino, in Brescia or Tavernola, in Bergamo. Montisola is the biggest lake island in Europe, it has petrol waters and pastel lakeside village, narrow streets and lakeside paths, far from bustling civilization and traffic chaos that we are all used to nowadays, where you can lose yourself and forget about the passing of time.

But Lake Iseo has much more to offer… starting point was the small village of Zone, where we had booked our hotel through Smartbox gift box. The dotted south shore of the lake brings you to the main town, Iseo with it’s medieval origins evident in the street patterns, arcaded shopping areas and peaceful squares. We continue our journey and we find the industrial town of Marone, the ideal place for walks, on foot and on mountain-bikes along the numerous paths that, from the centre, go up towards the Mount Guglielmo.

As breathtaking as the sights of the lake and promenades were, we found some even more interesting spots further up in the hills. Just above the town we were intrigued by the famous Pyramids of Zone, sisters of the equally renowned Pyramids of Segonzano in Trentino. These pyramids are the result of a rare erosion phenomenon and are better known in this area as “Chimneys of the Fairies”. It’s a magical place and if you happen to be in the area I suggest to visit thisnatural reserve, the access is free of charge and it’s easy to get to..

Walking along the ancient cobbled street that leads to the summit of Mount Guglielmo you encounter a fairy tail world that all children love: an outdoor exhibition of sculptures carved directly into the wood by local artist Luigi Zatti called Woods of the Dwarfs, natural reserve, the access is free of charge and it’s easy to get to..

a lush forest where tree trunks have been turned into fantasy characters: a sentinel army of mostly affectionate dwarfs, prosperous mothers, patriarchs and big matrons, but also bears, wolves, leverets, frogs, foxes and cats and there’s a Pinocchio too. While walking through this path you’re cherished by fantastic emotions…you can go back to your childwood for a while… a great therapy that I recommend both to children and adults.

Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. The mind can never break off from the journey.”

A special thank you to Elisa Pigoli for sharing her article and her experience with us.

EXPO Milano 2015 – Accommodating the Global Community Mon, 26 Jan 2015 10:50:27 +0000 Vacanze Lago

Milan will play host to the internationally recognised exhibition that is EXPO Milano 2015. This universal exposition runs from 1st May through to 31st October 2015.

The concerns of many over the quality and scarcity of our global food supply have shaped this year’s theme, entitled…

Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life

Showcasing demonstrations, products and stimulating experiences, EXPO 2015 embraces creativity and innovation, technology, culture and traditions. These interconnected impressions relate to the development of nutrition and how we can counteract certain global scenarios to focus on healthy, sustainable food.

It will be the second time Milan presents the exhibition, the first being Milan International in 1906. This year, 145 countries are taking part in the event which will inevitably make Italy the topic of conversation.

The role this world class exposition plays is to inform and build awareness for its visitors through participation. These unique experiences will promote a social, scientific and technological heritage that can build a sufficient food chain and preserve a taste and food culture

One of the most impressive attractions is the Lake Arena. With a diameter of 90 meters, it is the largest open space for visitors. Water games, fire shows, concerts and artistic performances will be on floating platforms.

The water comes from the Villoresi Canal and irrigates the nearby vegetation, signifying a strong connection between the element of water and the central theme.

A focal point at the centre of the lake is the Tree of Life, positioned to be a great spectacle.

Over 20 million visitors are expected to arrive in the city throughout the six month period of the event. With 1.29 million people currently living in Milan, the city will be extremely eventful and busy. That is why it may be beneficial to have a break outside of the metropolis.

From the EXPO’s artificial lake, designed to educate and enthuse its guests, to a magnificent and inspiring lake that captures its audience, leaving an impression. Lake Como is a convenient area to stay whilst visiting north-east Italy. It provides easy access to and from Milan, with a 45 minute drive or direct rail links from Como to Milano Centrale.

Guests, families, employees, clients and businesses will be astounded by Lake Como’s unparalleled beauty, lovely climate, leisure activities and spectacular landscapes. It is no wonder why Lake Como is the best destination to visit in Lombardy.

Lake Como is surrounded by tall, wooded mountains and is blessed with a variety of beautiful landscapes. The shores are dotted with pastures, woods, rough and imposing rocks, picturesque villages overlooking the water and beautiful villas with parks and gardens.

One of the most picturesque places to visit is the city of Como with its winding streets, monuments and fascinating sights that  can be seen comfortably on foot.

The pretty village of Laglio is not to be missed, it is a small and quiet town famous since the American actor George Clooney bought a villa here.

On the southern-west branch ogf Lake Como Lecco is certainly a popular destination for a day out. The town is well known being the set of the most famous Italian novel, “I promessi sposi”. There is in fact a tour (Manzonian Itinerary) Wheel you can visit the places that the tradition established as the location of the events of the novel.

Lake Como’s churches and abbeys Fri, 12 Sep 2014 10:05:30 +0000 Vacanze Lago

Lake Como has been the  transit  area between Italy and the Northern part of Europe throughout the ages and with this also one of the main “Faith Routes” that brought the evangelization from Italia to the Northern part of Europe. Around Lake Como there are ancient monasteries and abbeys in the most remote and tranquile positions, that certainly are worth a visit.

Not to be missed:

Abbazia di San Nicolò, Piona – Colico:

This 11th century Abbey is situated in the northern area of the lake and stands at the foot of Mount Legnone.  You can see beautiful frescoes inside the abbey and also the Romanesque cloisters in the quadrangle.  Liquers and herbal medicines (known throughout Italy for their healing powers) have been produced by the grey friars for over 150 years.  It is possible to reach it on foot but it may be easier to go by car (although the roads are a bit on the narrow side!). Don’t miss a boat trip to Piona Abbey!

Chiesa di San Pietro al Monte e Oratorio di San Benedetto – Civate:

This is a place of worship of considerable artistic interest at European level.
The church of S. Pietro al Monte in Civate together with the chapel of St.Benedict’s and a few rooms is all that remains of an ancient Benedictine monastic complex.
It is situated in an isolated position at an altitude of about 650 meters and it can be reached by walking for about an hour along a path through the woods.

Chiesa di San Martino – Griante Cadenabbia

San Martino is a small church perched on the mountain side above Griante. It’s official name is “Santuario Della Madonna delle Grazie di San Martino”, but most everyone simply refers to it as San Martino. If you are in, near, or even just passing through Griante and the weather is clear, this is a place you must not miss – not so much for the church, which is pretty, but for the spectacular views of Lake Como that can be enjoyed both on the way up and once at the church. The hike, or more appropriately walk, to San Martino is relatively short at about 45 minutes up from Griante and it’s really worth it!!

Basilica di S. Abbondio – Como:

It is one of the oldest churches of the town Como, built during the second half of the 11th century and an important example of Romanesque architecture. It has five aisles one decorated with beautiful frescos of the 13th century.  One of the remarkable features are the two bell towers.

S. Maria del Tiglio – Gravedona

It is very unique as it was built with black and white stone; on which there are raised symbols.  The architecture of the church includes vaulted arches, columns, apses and even arrow slits.  The design of the church made the ‘Maestri Comacini’ famous.

Abbazia di San Benedetto in Valperlana

The monastic settlement, isolated in the mountains over Ossuccio at the end of the Valperlana, shows a severe church in stone, which is made up of three irregular naves, three apses and a massive bell tower. Nearby there are the recently restored remnants of the monastery. It can be reached only by foot in 2 hours either from Ossuccio or from Lenno.

Santuario della Beata Vergine del Soccorso

This Sanctuary is located 400 metres above the town of Ossuccio and it has always been a popular destination of pilgrims. The main part of the church was built in the 16th century.  To reach this church, follow the path viale delle Cappelle.  On the way there you will pass by fourteen chapels that preserve over 200  statues representing the ‘Mysteries of the Rosary’. You can reach this church within a 40 minutes walk from Lenno or from the car park in Piazza Giovanni in Ossuccio.

But also…

Basilica San Vincenzo di Galliano – Cantù

Monastero di Santa Maria del Lavello – Calolziocorte

Lake Como’s beaches Fri, 12 Sep 2014 10:00:27 +0000 Vacanze Lago

Lake Como is not the seaside but it truly offers a wonderful range of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful lake water.

Around Lake Como there are many beautiful beaches, partly small and hidden, partly spacious and suitable for the whole family.

Most beaches are shingle beaches, however there are also a few sand beaches alongside a great selection of natural and widespread beaches of grass lawns.

The Northern part of Lake Como (Alto Lario) boasts the ideal conditions for sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing thanks to the strong wind (Breva) that blows constantly, besides offering many flat beaches well suitable for children and adults.

Lido di Lenno

The beaches (spiaggia) are generally open to the public and for everybody accessible in this part of the lake. This area has also the cleanest water because it is close to the Adda River that runs into the lake.

Colico, Gera Lario and Domaso offer the perfect settings for windsurfers and kite surfers.

The south-central lake boasts a fantastic range of well equipped Lidos and natural lake swimming areas, Menaggio, Bellagio, Como and Lenno are just some of them..

Enjoy a day out at Lake Como and discover some of the best beaches where you can spend relaxing moments and have fun. So what are you waiting for? Lake Como is waiting for you!
