Tremezzo, Villa Carlotta and aperitif lounge

By Vacanze Lago • on January 19, 2011

Tremezzo : a wonderful surprise. At the end of the lake front we find Villa Carlotta by chance. Somebody had said to us that it was worth a visit, so here we are:  pretty groups of houses scattered on the lake front up to the higher hamlets, many religious buildings and an uncontaminated nature.

We left Milan in the morning in direction Como – Porlezza following then for Bolvedro and then Tremezzo. Our first idea was to take the motorway A9 Milano-Laghi and exit at Como Nord, but a friend of ours advised us to take another road, a bit longer but nicer. So we followed for Lecco heading to Bellagio, stopped for breakfast in the café at the harbour and then took the boat; in 20 minutes we arrived in Tremezzo.

We start wandering around the town and then we head back to the lake front and this is when we saw the magnificent Villa Carlotta, built at the end of the 17th century by Giorgio Clerici.

The villa of rare beauty was then bought by a famous patron of arts Gianbattista Sommariva and became a museum (containing sculptures by Canova); later on the villa was sold to Princess Marianne of Nassau, Albert’s of Prussia wife, who gave it as a present to her daughter Carlotta in occasion of her wedding.

The gardens of Villa Carlotta are very particular in between an English and Italian style. There are many botanical species, among them rhododendrons and azaleas consisting of over 150 different sorts, old varieties of camellias, century old cedars, sequoias and cypresses.

Inside the park there are two picnic areas and a coffee bar with a lovely lake view ( Acqua Cheta lounge bar ). We stopped for an aperitif and enjoyed the lovely view and certainly though that a day out here is certainly worth it!

I spent 10 min. writing a comment and when I finally finished Mozilla Firefox crashed and my comment was gone. So now I will keep it short and straight to the point. I find something interesting to read on your blog every time I visit it. Respect!

The Acqua Cheta Bar is in Tremezzo inside the Teresio Olivelli Park (formerly Giardino
Meier). A public garden where it is nice to walk, have an aperitivo or sunbathe and relax!
