Trekking Lake Como – Itineraries between the mountains and the lake

By Vacanze Lago • on April 2, 2009

Lake Como is located in a wonderful geographic position between green valleys and mountains over 2000m high.

The best way to get to know this idyllic landscape of the lake surrounded by the mountains is to set out trips along the many pathways that from the lake shores spread out on the mountains.

There are some great hikes in the hills and mountains around Como, but we have chosen three significant ones that show the variety of landscapes

ITINERARY 1. From Brunate to Faggeto Lario. 5 HOURS.

Brunate is a delightful holiday resort above Como that has many villas in liberty style and spectacular views of Lake Como and the surrounding Alps. It can be reached by funicular from Como (not far from the railway station) and has a lot to offer, from footpaths to panoramic terraces to alpine refuges.

From Brunate we set out towards San Maurizio/Faro Voltiano and we follow along the Strada delle Baite until we get to Baita Bondella (1075m), where you can stop to have something to eat if you want to. The most tiring but good part of the excursion starts here. Around Monte Boletto you can admire spectacular views of the mountains and of the lake. We carry on until Bocchetta di Molina, where we can have a stop. We are at half way.

We follow then for Bocchetta di Lemma and Faggeto Lario, here the road starts going down. We go through the most beautiful beech woods of the whole lake, cool place in the summer and enchanting in all other seasons. We follow the road down until we get to the provincial road where we get a bus to Como.

ITINERARY 2. From Lierna to Varenna on the Sentiero del Viandante: 5 HOURS

The “Sentiero del Viandante” is a relatively easy lakeside path on the east coast. The most interesting point of this route is the track that goes from Lierna to Varenna , passing by S. Pietro Ortanella (992mt), offering many panoramic views, terrace-cultivation fields, rural churches and antique villages. Along the track you pass by St. Peters Church dated back to the 12th century and the Castle of Vezio , then you can stop and enjoy local cuisine at the restaurant I Cacciatori in Esino Lario. The panoramic views are wonderful when you get to the last part of the track, but it is not recommended if you’re afraid of heights.

Itinerary 3. Larian Mountains – From Breglia to Rifugio Menaggio: 1 HOUR AND FIFTEEN MINUTES.

This is one of the classic itineraries on the west side of Lake Como. You leave from Breglia (797 mt), not far from Menaggio that can be reached by bus or by car. Within an hours walk you get to the Rifugio Menaggio at 1400 mt of altitude, at the foot of Monte Grona (1736 m). From here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Lake Como and of the surrounding mountains.
