Lake Orta. Searching for silence on San Giulio Island

By Comemafalda • on February 5, 2009

Lake Orta, San Giulio Island . San Giulio Island, tiny island that stands in the middle of Lake Orta, is a place of mists and devotion, ideal for a day out in search of peace and quiet.

Boats leave from Orta San Giulio for visits to the island. Once you get there, the main path circuits the island divides it self into two smaller paths: the Way of Silence and the Way of Meditation . I suggest you to walk along some of those tiny paths that lead to the houses, they offer great romantic views!

By walking along the path of silence or entering the prestigious Basilica of San Giulio (IV Cent.), a roman church from where you can admire a breathtaking lake view, dedicated to the saint that saved the island.
An ancient legend relates that San Giulio reached the Island around the year 390 on his cloak and after defeating the dragons that lived on the island he founded the church and dedicated himself to the evangelization of the island.

The only people who live here are the Benedictine monks of the monastery Mater Ecclesiae .
It is possible to take part of the life of the monastery by spending some days here for whoever wants to live an experience of meditation, there is a little guestroom that can sleep up to 20 people.
People who own villas and old houses like the Villa Tallone come here to stay occasionally. This villa was owned by Cesare Augusto Tallone, who used to make pianos and was tuner of the very famous Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Every year concerts and musical events take place here.

If you get hungry you can go to Restaurant San Giulio , in via Basilica 4. It is recommendable to book a table in high season.

My husband and myself have visited Orta on many occasions and I can honestly say it’s our most favourite place ever. The tranquility, the away from it all feel is hard to explain. We look forward to revisiting it every time we leave . Isola San Giulio is another step into an idyllic world. The peace here is total, the sound of the church bells calling the nuns to prayer is the only intrusion. It’s just a fabulous place, not for people who like to sunbathe, enjoy night life, or for shopaholics. That’s why we like it so much. We hope to return soon.
