Day out to Varenna and lunch

We leave from Milan on a Saturday in November. It is a nice autumn day, clear sky and fresh air, not that cold yet. In almost an hour with no traffic at all we get to Varenna. It is amazing how quiet and warm it is in this time of the year.


Varenna is situated on the west coast of Lake Como at only 70km away from Milan and it is one of nicest resorts of the lake . This is because of its good location between the lake and the hilly area, because if it’s well preserved-ancient houses in stone and because of its tight alleys and steep stairways that lead to the lake giving you extraordinary panoramic views.

There are no problems at all to find a free car park, in this time of the year there are very few tourists and even the Milanese people that are usual escaping from the city seem to ignore this place and prefer to spend there time in long traffic queues taking them to the nearby ski resorts.

Varenna is not as famous as Bellagio and but has nothing to envy other lake resorts. Authentic is the right adjective to describe this town, where days go by so calm like the lake waters.

We start to explore the village starting from one of the several stairways that from the main square lead steep down to the lake. We go down until the little dock where we see some nice cafés overlooking the lake.

We go along the lake promenade taking some photos now and then. Soon it is time for lunch so we lead our selves back the old town centre of Varenna.


We stop for lunch at the restaurant “ Il Cavatappi ” found while surfing the net.

The cuisine is strictly linked to the territory and offers lake dishes and non with the possibility to personalize them. A simple but in the same time elegant restaurant that follows the tradition but is also creative.

The place is very small but comfortable , not more that five or six tables. Luckily we had booked. Our table was the only one still empty.

We start our lunch with some antipasti: missoltini with polenta and oranges and breasaola from Valchiavenna accompanied by a white wine, Novella Chiavennasca that went real well with the missoltini. Vote 7,5.

For our main course we had fish: spaghetti with missoltini . Fantastic. Vote 8.

Our second course was based on meat: lamb ribs and pork fillet with a leek and liquorice sauce, tender and tasty. Vote 8

We ended our meal with some local cheese and a taste of a delicious home made cake. Vote 8.

We spent 80 Euros the two of us with a bottle of wine included. The right price if we compare it with the good quality of our meal. Restaurant Cavatappi Varenna is highly recommended and we suggest you to book!


There is a wide choice of things to do in Varenna after lunch.

An excursion to castle of Vezio (an hours walk) is an example. Otherwise you can visit Villa Monastero with its wonderful garden.

But we decide to walk around the streets of Varenna and stay to admire the lake front with its wonderful colours in this time of the year, until the sun starts to go down and it gets a bit chilly, so we decide to go back home. Goodbye Varenna!

Going to be in Varenna for a week and then want to get closer to the airport
wanted to stay in Orta San Giulio, but I heard it is not accessible if we do
not have a car — is that correct.

Easier by car if you are in Varenna, but Orta San Giulio is also accessible by train. From Milano Centrale Station (change in Novara) approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. From Varenna to Milano 1 hour by train. Go to Trenitalia website to plan the journey, the station in Orta is Orta Miasino, 3 km from the center of Orta San Giulio.
